This evening, the power went out in my room (thanks to my neighbors). When I tried to power my Gentoo box back up, it hangs just after kjournald starts. Here are the lines leading up to the hang:

Code:
EXT3-fs: INFO: recovery required on readonly filesystem.
EXT3-fs: wtire access will be enabled during recovery.
kjournald starting.  Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3-fs: ide2(33,3): orphan cleanup on readonly fs

After that, it just hangs (or seems to). I've let it sit for 25 minutes with no change. crtl-alt-del to restart and it hangs in the same spot.

Any suggestions? Obviously the fs is ext3. Is it typical to have ext3 partitions die if the power goes out? I've had others on another box get messed up when the power goes out.

I've never had any problems with recovering ext3 from a crash but sometimes it does take a cosiderable amount of time. Even though there is no progress showing the machine obviously doesn't "hang" as ctrl+alt+del works. I'd suggest that you leave the computer on for, say, a couple of hours or so. If there still hasn't been any changes you'd probably need to use the live-cd to run fsck on the partition in question...

ok, it's been running for about 7 hours now, so I'll try the live cd later.

Yeah... seven hours seem a bit much... I hope running it from the cd'll do it :)
