Hey all,
I'm wondering how effiecently linux is using my ram? Right now all of it is used, from what I understand a good portion of this is used to cache recent activities. When I open something else that is in need of the the ram some of the cached ram will be reallocated right? If so, wouldn't that take more time then writing to ram that was allready free? |

The cached ram will just be overwritten. Takes no more time. _________________ we are microsoft, lower your firewalls and surrender your pc's. we will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. your culture will adapt and service us. resistance is futile. |

Well, the kernel does need to remove the cache entries and mark the memory as used, not to mention map it into the process space and so forth... thousands, probably tens of thousands of cycles.
However, that is still on an entirely different timescale than reading from the HD; the computer can practically calculate the meaning of life while waiting for a single block to be read.
The kernel - especially 2.6 - is *far* more efficient in memory management than just about every other OS. |
