hi, guys :oops:
I've been sitting & thinking about how to break my 40Gb hdd into partitions for gentoo. While having my oldy 10Gb the process didn't seem to be that hard, :? but now (doh!) ... :x So that's what I've decided to make yet:
Code:
===snip-paper-snip===
/dev/hda1    30MB    /boot
/dev/hda2    20GB    /home
/dev/hda5    1GB      /
/dev/hda6    400MB  swap
/dev/hda7    10GB   /usr
/dev/hda8    1GB     /opt
/dev/hda9    2GB     /var
===snip-paper-snip===
(+5GB for some new partitions, perhaps)

As you can see this is quite similar to what gentoo handbook suggests, but is it reasonable? I have lots of scruples concerning /opt & /var & swap.
    /var: as to /var things are more or less clear (gentoo compiles stuff inside /var/tmp/portage)
    /opt: I'm not even sure that I gonna use anything besides fluxbox\blackbox as wm :( So do I need such a big /opt? Tho, hell knows...
    swap: as to RAM my notebook (yep, it's a notebook) has 256MB, so again I guess 400MB of swap should be pretty fine, right?
Mates, all advice & comments are really-really welcome! :oops:

swap is ok, but I'd suggest making /opt and /var a little bit bigger. if you're going to install openoffice anytime, it will take about 200MB and one day it might be to small. Same for /var, emerging gnucash takes about 2 GB space in /var, if i remember correctly.

Using LVM might be an option, too.

It's only my opinion, but I think that if you've got just one harddrive, there is no need to create 7 :) partitions, maybe 3 or 4...
I prefer this scheme: boot, swap and root; or maybe boot, swap, root and /home...
