|
|
Hi,
I'm planning to upgrade my system in the near-ish future (and keep my fingers crossed that Winex will run EQ2). Right now I have an MSI KT3 Ultra motherboard (VIA chipset), with an Athlon XP and a GeForce 3 Titianium 200.
I'm plannning to get an Athlon XP 3200+ or whatever happens to be the top dog at the time, plus a new mobo to support it, probably some new RAM unless the old stuff is compaitible, and a spangly new graphics card.
Does anyone have any comments on this upgrade path? Can anyone recommend a mobo (standard ATX) which works well for them. What is the current top notch graphics card (preferably nVidia - see below).
Also, if I stick to nVidia graphics cards and ensure I compile a kernel with no motherboard specfic components what are my chances of being able to swap out the MB/CPU/Graphics card and be able to boot right back into the machine? I have no desire to rebuild Gentoo from scratch... _________________ Matt.

mattsavigear,
To run a 400MHz FSB Athlon XP you need at leat 3200 memory. Its unlikely you have that.
If you get an nForce2 chipset motherboard, you will need to emerge the driver for its onboard NIC. that can be a probelm without the NIC.
You should just be able to move eveything over as you suggest and it will work. You can add in the optimisations for the new hardware at update time, so you do it when you rebuild things anyway. _________________ Regards,
