I had one similar error, but not exactly.
I'm using gentoo 2005.1

Code:

geekslack@Weasley ~ $ cat /etc/gentoo-release
Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre8
geekslack@Weasley ~ $

and KDE-3.4.2 (in other wm the error persist).
including root user, the error is equal.

Code:
Application initialization failed: this isn't a Tk applicationunknown color name "Black"
Error in startup script: can't invoke "wm" command:  application has been destroyed
    while executing
"wm state . withdraw"
    (file "/usr/bin/amsn" line 43)

Any idea?

PS: sorry for bad english
