Alrighty folks, now I had this problem with slackware cos I didn't change a setting in rc.d

But gentoo doesn't have a rc.d folder

so, I've just installed mysql and I run it with the mysqld_safe command and it stops immediately

any clues?

ok...

ran /usr/bin/mysql_db_install

and got this..

neither 'tux' or 'localhost' could be looked up with
/usr/bin/resolveip
please configure 'hostname' command to return a correct hostname.

What could be incorrect about my hostname??

Exactly, I had the same problem. I just added my hostname with the ip 127.0.0.1 in the file /etc/hosts and it all worked great!
