So when I ran etc-update (hate it, hate it!) it overwrote my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4 file. I have a minor problem in that I cannot remember what module my soundcard needs loaded. Any ideas on where i can find that? Need any other information? Thanks in advance!

Two ways to try to do it.

Code:
cat /proc/pci
and see if that reminds you of anything. If it doesn't try searching for the stuff on the Audio lines. An example from my system:
Code:
  Bus  0, device  31, function  5:
Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 2).
      IRQ 9.
      I/O at 0x1c00 [0x1cff].
      I/O at 0x18c0 [0x18ff].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe8080c00 [0xe8080dff].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe8080800 [0xe80808ff].

Or, boot Knoppix or the LiveCD and see if it finds the soundcard, and do an lsmod.

Not to pick but...

YOU overwrote it. etc-update won't overwrite any files unless you enter the number telling it to. As the user of the system YOU are in control not etc-update and it is your fault the file is gone.

Be more careful next time, check what files are going to be updated, take the appropriate steps for each file, and the upgrade will work just fine. Stop trying to blame Gentoo for allowing you complete control over your system. :)

i'm not exactly blaming gentoo =) i just am enough of a newbie that i don't really know exactly what each file does. and i swear i didn't tell it to overwrite rc.conf! i'll let you know how this turns out.

I truly don't like etc-update. If you have 50 files to update, you think you've made sure to manually merge the important ones, and then realize that you've forgotten about /etc/fstab.

I think it should be modified to copy the old file to, for example /etc/.____fstab.old or something like that. Not much work, and easier to recover from.

But we don't want easy, do we?

I suggest a compromise: copy the files as you suggest, but don't tell the newbies. Us oldtimers (hm...) will have it easy, the newbies will despair. That's how Linux is meant to be! ;-)
