I will buy this great game after spring break! I am leaving on friday, so its pointless for me to buy it quite yet. Perhaps it will give the retailers more time to get the special edition.

To the person above who pirated the game: go buy it. its cheap, really. here we have an awesome game with LOTS of nice extras, and with linux support as well. show your appreciation by buying the game and playing it (it calls home with various stats, including host os).

i also got the dvd special edition (as with everyone else, NOT interested in swapping 6 cds :) ). yeah the install is huge, but i am not complaining one bit. the amount of extras included is simply amazing. 100 levels. a full blown level editor. a 3d editor!! And i know its not part of the install, but on the second disc there are HOURS of editing/modding tutorial videos in a fairly high quality divx format. not just level editing but scripting, mutators, maya 3d, vehicles, etc. I honestly think this game is going to be one of the modding community favorites, much like the original quake.

That said I of course am playing it in winblows (I hosed my 3d support in gentoo), but i do want to get it going in linux again. i am sure i can figure out the 3d stuff, my major concern is that i made my linux filesystem a tad too small and probably wont be able to install the game again. but, i assume there it is probably possible to drop the linux executable into my existing windows install directory and have it use the game data there. any ideas?

I got the SE and the install went fine (took about 5-10 minutes). The game itself runs great (including VOIP support), except it takes a while to load the maps with the texture quality maxed out. It crashed once, but aside from that it's been smooth as peanut butter.

emerge xfree-dri

Other than that there are a trillion posts related to this on the forum search for ati drivers and/or xfree-dri using the quick search box on the top right hand corner of the forum pages

I got the SE version and it was sweet loading off one DVD.

For long load times, I've seen suggestions that you should turn off precaching of textures.

Remember that your settings are in ~/.ut2004/System/ (your home directory) and changes to settings in the main ut2004 directory probably won't affect anything.

I bought and installed the game fine on Tuesday. It is totally smokin'. The install process was very simple. The only thing is that you have to be sure to read the README file. You need to make sure you are able to unmount and eject the installation disks (i.e. don't be IN the /mnt/cdrom directory when you do "bash linux-install.sh" or whatever.

I also just sent a letter of thanks to Atari for putting out this great game on the Linux platform.

Best FPS for Linux hands down. Great quality.

I think its funny though people complain about things like changing out the CDs. The game comes with soooo much content its incredible. I can't believe it wasn't the standard $50 I'm used to paying. When I saw the map selection and game type section my jaw dropped.

If your installing and you notice your CPU cannot access your CDROM drive and hard drive at the same time, you need to turn DMA on your CDROM with hdparm otherwise it might take you hours to install the game. The game installs in 10 to 15 minutes assuming you have a decent speed CDROM. Supermount helps too.

The game rocks. I had no problems getting it to install. In fact, it was as easy as a windows install if you don't count typing sh linuxinstall.sh. There is a ton of stuff on here. All the stuff from ut2003 is basically here (maps, characters, sounds) and a whole lot of new stuff. It's a huge game full of content, and I must say, I'm quite impressed. I'm going to write atari a letter telling them how much I appreciate them making the game available on windows and linux, and pray that they continue to do so in the future. While not all games are making their way onto linux, I've noticed that alot of the good ones are. I hope the trend continues.

supermount may be good for the cd install but for some reason, the installer really doesn't like supermount for the dvd install.

I think the Special Edition is fairly close to sold out and retailers have stopped taking additional orders. I'm sure you'll get the DVDs, just like me.

Amazon still has not shipped the game to me... I can't wait. Good thing that I went and picked up Ninja Gaiden for xbox while I wait.. that game rules! It looks like I'll have to share my free time between those two games when UT2004 comes in.

I'll get one going as soon as my DVD comes in... also, check https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45031 if you have the CD version or just want to know when it gets added.

I am also doing the amd64 install, so we should have both versions all at once.

I went to 5 different stores within 45 minutes of each one opening and they were all sold out of the DVD special edition. That's 50 copies selling in 45 minutes in a 2 square mile area.

Oh yeah, the regular versions were all sold out too, don't know what that amounts to.

Then I went to comp-usa, which was not officially supposed to carry the game until tomorrow. I told the customer service guy that I had gone to 5 stores, and he said that he could check in the back to see if the shipment had already arrived.

Lo and behold, I now have a copy of the SE :D

Thank you compusa dude!

UT2k4 is phun, the power core gameplay is good, albiet a little weird at first considering i didn't read the manual at all.

I jacked my copy of SE for $29.23 @ bestbuy. $29.99, -10% if ya sign up for 2wk trial of netflix (-3bucks), +8.25% sales tax(NY).

Really looking for an ebuild of the dedicated server....

Yes, the amd64 version is included on the CD!
Thank you Epic, for taking these bold steps in an otherwise reluctant industry. I wish more companies acted like this, just imagine the impact that a Linux version of Half-Life and consequentially Counter-Strike, would have made.

The game (supposedly) even has support for SMP, but it's too early to tell if there is any difference. All I can say, is that right now, the game is running incredibly smooth on my dual-opteron 248 box.

There is 1108 8O lines long config files hiding under ./ut2004/System, so there should be a lot of room for tweaking.

But first of all I just need to get my Audigy 2 soundcard to work...

How well does it run relative to the demo?

The demo brought my system to a crawl (granted it's a PIII 933 MHz, 384 MB ram, GeForce FX 5700 (?) graphics card with 256 MB ran). I don't really want to buy the full blown version if it's going to run so slowly (I'll guess I was getting 1-2 frames per second).

It feels to me that it was faster, but not fast enough tos ave you from 1-2 in the demo

btw, the "minimum required" CPU is a 1ghz P3, Athlon, "1.2ghz recommended" so i dont know what kind of increase you can ever expect

What kernel are you using and are you sure you're using the Nvidia drivers?

What resolution / quality options do you have enabled?

Even at 933Mhz, you should still be able to get some playable framerates out of a Geforce 5700.

For me, the game runs exactly the same as the demo version.

I ran the demo on 2.4.22 (I have since upgraded to 2.6.3 but still have some bugs it iron out) and yes, I'm using the real nVidia drivers (the nVidia symbol shows up when I boot into X).

Those results (Really low fps) were with the default graphics settings, which I think was 1024 x 786 (I can never remember the number that corresponds with 1024).

I ratched it way back to 800 x 600 and turned the details down/off and it became playable. I'm not sure how to check fps in UT 2004 but it "felt" like 30 or so, but once I did that but it was just kind of ugly.

As a side note, I play Savage a fair amount and typically get 15-35 fps.

The only other issue I can think of is the my box only has a 200 W power supply and I'm supposed to have a 300 W supply for the grpahics card. Could that be hindering things significantly?
