How to install ATI-drivers?

Hi,

I've just installed Gentoo 2004.0, X11 and windowmaker. I've a got an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 on my laptop and I've read somewhere that I should install the ati-drivers to get better results.

First of all, is that true? Should I?

I know how to install that but if I do, do I also need to:
- emerge unmerge X11?
- re-install windowmaker?
- re-install other apps?
