|
|
I needed a browser fast so I emerged firefox-bin. Now, I'd like to compile an optimised version. Do I have to do anything special to have this work?
Obviously, I could unmerge firefox-bin, but I want to continue using the browser while emerge grinds away on my whimpy little P2. Since the two builds have different names (even though they presumably both install to the same location on disk) I want to be sure I know what to expect.
How do I replace firefox-bin with firefox, without losing the ability to browse while it happens? |

AFAIK they block each other, but portage will tell you if they do, anyway. _________________ shine on,

Actually I think it's impossible seen as the packages block each other.
Try running emerge -p mozilla-firefox , you'll see.
I had the same issue, in the end I unmerge mozilla-firefox-bin and just left mozilla-firefox compile overnight. _________________ http://blog.chaostrophy.org |

Thanks guys.
Right now I''m emerging TeTeX and there's no end in sight (guess I should install one of those emerge progress scripts).
I prefer to emerge one thing at a time, so I'll give it a try tomorrow. |

TeTeX finished before I left last night so I started up firefox. The emerge finshed normally and now
Code: | slate root # emerge -p mozilla-firefox-bin
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] net-www/mozilla-firefox (from pkg net-www/mozilla-firefox-bin-0.8)
[ebuild R ] net-www/mozilla-firefox-bin-0.8
|
And
Code: | slate root # emerge -p mozilla-firefox
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] net-www/mozilla-firefox-bin (from pkg net-www/mozilla-firefox-0.8)
[ebuild R ] net-www/mozilla-firefox-0.8
|
Now when I try normal firefox
Code: | slate root # emerge -ku mozilla-firefox
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> Auto-cleaning packages ...
>>> No outdated packages were found on your system.
* GNU info directory index is up-to-date.

Firefox runs, so I guess it worked. I wonder about that "block" though. Anyone have any ideas what I should do about it? |

Well, I gambled. First I Code: | emerge --unmerge mozilla-firefox-bin | then I Code: | emerge -ukp mozilla-firefox | Which came back with nothing to do! Woo Hoo!
And the browser still works to be working. |
