All seems well but cannot emerge

I have completed the install and all seems in order but now I cannot get net access so I cannot emerge. ifconfig seems ok and route -n seems to be in order but whenever I try to route there is roughly a 5-10 secong lag before it displays. and whenever I ping there is also that lag of 5 - 10 seconds. DNS is instant and the ping eventualy goes through... any ideas on how to get the net back to being functional?

Are you actualy able to get to remote sites or ping them?
If you can't what is the error message that ping comes back with?
What type of connection are you using?

I am able to ping them it just takes forever to resolve, a ping time of around 6 or 7 seconds.

how are you connected to the internet?
Are you using DSL / Cable / Dial-up, are you behind a router or anything.

Trying to get a picture of how you connect to the internet.

Are you connecting through an ethernet card?
If so, what's your card and what kernel are you using?
