I somehow can't find the Athlon iso for the latest release of gentoo. All I get is a ~80mb .tar which I can unrar as a 280mb file, but not a file that creates a bootable cd. Can anyone give me the url to the latest Athlon release (stage 3)? |

If you are refering to the Athon-XP stage 3 file you can get it here
If you are talking about the iso for the Live cd you can get that here |

I've downloaded the stage 3-file that is in that folder, but when I use the file it extracts to create a cd it's not browsable nor is it bootable, maybe I'm doing something wrong? |

So I assume you are trying to make a live CD if so use this link it will give you an iso. You can then use your favorite burning software to make a cd out of it. |

I'm kind of confused, should I download the LiveCD and then input the stage 3 .tar? The liveCD is @ 639mb while the stage 3 is a tar @ 80 something |

Is this an initial install? By this I mean are you already booting with a bootable cd and needing to down load the stage 3 packet.
OR
Are you looking to make a bootable CD so you can start your Gentoo installation? |

So this image IS supposed to be bootable? Exactly what files in the image initiate the boot? The only file in the root is portage-20040223.tar.bz2. There is no boot file or anything that I've seen before. This isn't the first time I've installed a version of Linux, but I remember that I never had a problem getting it to load off the CD. Could the LiveCD for the Athlon XP's may be missing something? |

Well I sounded like a newb (I am but I'm actively trying not to sound like one) but I think that the AthlonXP LiveCD ISO has a problem. I can boot the universal but cannot boot the AthlonXP. I got it from here |

The athlon-xp folder in that link only contains an iso file that starts with the name "packages." This is because it is the precompiled athlon-xp packages CD. So yes it will never boot, EVER. It's not supposed to. |

install-x86-universal-2004.0.iso
This ist the right one to install, whereas it's nice to have also the packages disk around... saves a lot time downloading and compiling. |
