This is an error I get when I try to run a program, from terminal. This is after I emerge ati-drivers and ati-drivers-extras and I did an opengl-update ati. I know there is a thread open on ati drives, but I have no near the time to read a 70 page thread. I have an ATI Radeon 9200. I try the xfgxconfig( or whatever it is called, I doing this form memory) but it is a little to complexe for me, like the refresh rate. A guide for this would be nice. I know I am forgeting sometihng so I will post it later if I remember. |

When you say from the terminal, are you referring to a program that is related to X, or something that does not require X to run?
Assuming this problem only occurs when starting X-related programs, it looks to me like you may want to read the how-to article for the radeon drivers at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=105524 and pay close attention to the kernel configuration section.
Note: I have had better luck with my Radeon 9600 Pro compiling agpgart into the kernel instead of as a module, so you may want to try that.
When you run fglrxconfig, don't worry too much about the more advanced sounding options. The default should be fine for the most part. The only one you need change is the agpgart option. Make sure you say "yes" to "Use External AGPGart?" This will utilize the agpgart you compiled into the kernel.
As far as your monitor refresh rates go, start out conservative (option #1) and work your way up.
I hope I have helped a little bit. I spent a good 3 weeks trying to get my Radeon working, and I know how frustrating it can be. Especially since none of the how-to's in these forums really worked for me.

| In theory you could use the old one. but I would be careful about that. Make sure you keep the fglrx driver options intact (assuming you plan to add to the working XF86Config file). Otherwise, there shouldn't be too much of a problem. |
