I did an:

emerge -U world

and after 2 days of compiling, I ended with KDE 3.2.1 but all the icons are missing. I have tried "applying" other icons sets but no icons are appearing.

Has anyone encountered this problem before?

If that doesn't work, try "kbuildsycoca --noincremental"

I have logged out, rebooted. I have tried logging in to KDE 3.2.0, but still no icon. I emerged kdegraphics 3.2.1 again in the hope that that's things might have gone wrong but still no icons.

I remember seeing a message about a loadimage program error but cannot remember the exact message. I think I will re-emerge kde 3.2.0 from the Packages CD and see if it will restore things back to what it was before I upgraded to 3.2.1.

I reverted back to kde 3.2.0. Problem fixed. all the icons are back again.

Now I'm now re-emerging kde 3.2.1 to see if the icons disappear again. Hopefully not.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.
