Which card has the best support on gentoo and Linux in general? Nvidia or ATI?

NVidia generally has the best support. ATI recently released Linux drivers, but you'll see a majority of Linux users with OpenGL support are using NVidia.

I'm pretty new to the Gentoo desktop experience myself, but from browsing the forums it seems the nvidia cards are the way to go, so that's what I did a little while ago. Incidentally, video driver issues are a Linux issue, not a specific distro.

At this stage IMHO nvidia cards have better support in linux.
ATI are improving linux support, but the lack of support in their mobility range is causing some grief.

Those that have ATI drivers working will be very happy with the results.
Same with the nvidia drivers but I think they have more features... I can get dual monitor support on them, but never on another box with ati drivers on a ati card

buy matrox or nvidia, you wont regred it!

ROFLMFAO

That might be true for the older g400's - but hell if anyone ever had a painless parhelia drivers installation i'm a turkey. And the parhelia is the only matrox card that is even somewhat competitive nowadays.

Hum... looks like Nvidia is the right choice... too bad, I wanted to buy a Radeon. Well it is not worth it if it is not going to work is it?

It's not so much that it wouldn't work, it's more that the performance is currently rather disappointing compared to the Windows Catalyst drivers.
