Gladbird,
Set the password with the command before you chroot. Then you can login at other VTs. _________________ Regards,

Why would you need to set the password unless you were trying to ssh into the box?
As I recall from my last install days *a couple ago* when you ALT+F2 it is already logged in and even if you do an exit it still auto logs you back in. |

Thanks Neddy... i'm off to do an install now.
Maletek...don't know why i need to set the password, but I do. When i Alt+F2 it just gives me a login prompt....guess your install and mine are different? _________________ "They'll say we love the darkness, I'll say we hate their half-light."

I have noticed in the past with the older LiveCDs that you could just login to other terminals, but with the new 2004.0 LiveCD you must set the password so you can login... no more automatic logins....
Is that not the case for you? _________________ Michael Rhodes

hrmph that is very odd I wounder why they did away with the autologin bit? I just loaded the disk again and sure enough it does ask but then again my last install I didnt use the faq, stage 3 off the top of my head, after about 20 - 30 previous installs it kinda stays there.
Anyone know an exect reason why this was changed? |

I don't have any experience with any previous installs of Gentoo, unfortunately.
I used passwd to set the root password as something dumb while I was doing the install, then used links in another vterminal to check the documentation.
Of course, after I've finished the install, I changed the password to something much less dumb.

Hmm... I'm almost sure that they purposely scramble your passwd for security reasons... Not blank passwords.... thats too un secure...
At least the last time I read that big page of text when you boot the cd it said that the password was scrambled.... and that is why you have to change it, there would be no way of finding out what the password is off a fresh boot _________________ Michael Rhodes

I just checked the documentation, and I think you're right - it didn't mention the password being blank at all.
I'll edit my post. Thanks for the correction! |
