Hello!

I'm currently trying out gentoo on an old laptop, and have been hesitating to install gentoo on my newer Toshiba Satellite 5100-503 because I haven't found any information on if the media buttons work under linux. I'm quite fond of them and love to use the remote that goes along with them, so I was wondering if anybody has gotten them to work on a comparable toshiba laptop? How about the 'mode' function (CD/DVD or mp3)?

tia,
Philipp

If you're referring to the standard media controls on the front of a toshiba laptop(i.e. the ones to control your media while laptop is closed) then yes, there is indeed a way to use them in linux. These keys and their inputs are recognized using the toshiba-acpi modules(did you configure your kernel to include them?) In /proc/acpi/toshiba you'll find "keys". When a key is pressed, the code changes, and then for it to send the next key in queue, the "hotkey ready" needs to once again equal 0. You could write a simple daemon to grab hotkey inputs and execute certain actions.

Check out toshkey and toshkeyd, I think they're at sourceforge.

Good luck!

DId a little more research and testing and am now using the fnfx package.

You can check it out at http://fnfx.sourceforge.net/

I like it so far, and is very configurable and works well.

Oops... haven't checked this topic in a while.

I ran into tclkeymon, available on sourceforge a little while back and started rewriting large chunks of it, and getting it to work with the remote.
Don't have a lot of time lately as I have a lot to do for uni, but I will post my results some time. I will also look into the fnfx package when I get some more time.

Thanks for your help!
