Gnome is hanging after I see the two first icons (last is metacity or so?). The only way to login into gnome is as root. How can I fix/come around this problem. Is there a log for gnome starting up? Totally newbie :)
THX, in advance.

Regards, jjeremia.

Try this before logging in again:
Code:
rm -rf ~/.nautilus ~/.gconf* ~/.gnome*

How are you logging in in the first place? startx? gdm?

Thanks! It worked. But how do I enable Nautilus or do I have to do anything?
What did I do with this command?

Thanks alot, again.

I have the same problem. Normal users cannot log into Gnome. I removed EVERYTHING from their home directories, but they still cannot start gnome. (Firefox, Mozilla and Thunderbird aren't working in kde, too.)

any hints?

You removed all the user preferences, so next time you logged into GNOME, they were set back to defaults. You don't have to do anything to enable nautilus, it's part of the default desktop.
