This is the error I have when I try to start the new kernel 2.6.3 I compiled with "genkernel --menuconfig all" command.
Do you have any suggestion for the strategy I could adopt to solve this problem I don't understaiind?
Do I have to change the .config or something else?
This is the first time I use gentoo try to leave redhat. I want to do it!
thanks in advance,

Did you remember to rerun /sbin/lilo after changing your kernel ? |

I am using grub with that configuration:
title Gentoo Linux 2.6.3
root (hd0,6)
kernel (hd0,6)/kernel-2.6.3-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda8
initrd (hd0,6)/initrd-2.6.3-gentoo-r1
The Redhat kernle works with:
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.22)
root (hd0,6)
kernel (hd0,6)/bzImage.2.4.22jan2004 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
initrd (hd0,6)/initrd-2.4.22jan2004.img _________________ Gentoo 2004.0 on a pentium3 900 mhz 512mbites ram |

GRUB should not be giving you that error unless the kernel is corrupted or the filesystem is messed-up on your /boot partition. |

this is interesting. i've just run into this problem for the first time. fwiw, i've been using Grub forever, and i've never seen this problem before. what a coincidence.
in my case, i ran into the problem after compiling a new kernel. after compiling the new kernel, the sytem wouldn't boot, and issued the "invalid compressed format (err=1)" message.
i was lucky that i knew the long name of the previously compiled kernel, and was able to edit the grub command line to boot the old kernel.
i'm looking at grub and the hard disk filesystem now... _________________ .

coincidence. it looks like i had a real file system problem. dumbass me -- during a reinstall i used a reiser fstab entry on an ext2 boot partition.
the kernel was GDS 2.6.9-r9. all GDS kernels after that one suffer from the screen blanking bug. _________________ .
