Kernel during install

I've followed the Gentoo.org installation hand book like a slave. Now when I try to emerge the kernel the installation tries to download it. The last time I installed gentoo this did not happen. What is going on? any ideas on how to make the installation look for the necessary files on the hard drive?

look at /etc/make.conf DISTFILES

nano -w /etc/make.conf gives this error:

Illegal instruction
