|

Hi!
I am about to re-partition my HDD, and this time I'd like to avoid the stupied misstake of putting my music on a ReiserFS partition. Of course, it's not stupied itself, until you want to read it from Windows.
I'm a long-time Linux user, still I found myself in need of running Windows recently (mostly because of a team-work in Dreamweaver, me and some guys from school).
It ends up with copying my music under Linux to a FAT-partition (because NTFS write is still unsecure...). Acctually I'd like to have Windows on a NTFS, but then I wouldn't be able to copy over my music to it...
And vice versa, reading a ReiserFS from Windows is impossible...
Now I'm planning to reinstall it, as I said before. I thought about having Linux / on Reiser, Windows on NTFS and music on....? Suggestions? It has to be read-writeable from Linux and at least readable from Windows (though write support would have been nice).
Are there any such filesystems? I run Windows XP here, Linux is latest mm-patch to 2.6-tree.
Is NFS an alternative? Other suggestions?
Thanks for your time!
Jacob
P.S
Of course, I could use FAT, that is r/w on both systems, to put my music on but it feels just unsecure... _________________ Registred Linux user #191143!

qnx,
If you hate FAT32 that much look into ext2 read support for windows. There is/was some but as far as I know it was read only _________________ Regards,

I thought about a more "native" Windows read ability, like just seeing a partition as a "disk" (you know, "The Windows way" of showing partitions like an own harddrive...) in the Explorer or something. Isn't it possible to mount a NFS partiotion in Windows? _________________ Registred Linux user #191143!

I'd really suggest you give FAT32 another try. There is no real alternative if you need write support. Well, actually there is one: Get yourself an old pentium 1 200 machine with a bios capable of detecting "big" hdd's (ebay: ~50 bucks), put in the hard drive that should be shared between linux and win, and install samba on it... that's how I do it and it works fine. What sucks is that you have to boot another machine. But if you have too much money in the future you can get yourself an IDE raid controller and mirror the important data Never trust single IDE hard drives. When they go to hell, they take your data with them (to pay charon with, I guess) _________________ if only I could fill my heart with love... |

Of course, two machines is the best solution, running Samba on one of them. But I don't want this
Anyway... I found this and this.
Anyway... I'll try with FAT32 I guess.. It's not what I wanted, I was searching for a stable filesystem that works after some "hard" resets, like reiser... A fs with file journal, readable by Windows. It seems like nothing like this exists (yet).... Well, thanks anyway! _________________ Registred Linux user #191143!

Btw, how big can a FAT32 be... If I remeber correct, more than 8 GB is not good... And I mean.. 8GB of music? I have 3-4 times more than that.. Does it mean I need several FAT32s? _________________ Registred Linux user #191143!

My current FAT32 partition is 36.5 GiB (~40 billion bytes), so they can be at least that big. I'm not sure what the hard limit is though.
It's really a nice solution; Windows stuff on NTFS, anything shared on FAT32, / on Reiser, /home on ext3. |

fat32 can be much bigger, over 80GB that I know of, probably bigger than that (fat16 was more limited)
I keep a separate 35GB fat partition for my music; an ntfs partition for windows (which will soon go to /dev/null ) and a reiserfs partition for linux... how about that? _________________ Non fa male! Non fa male! |

Ooopps.. I asked the wrong question. I don't care how big FAT32 can become theoreticly - I wondered who big it should be to still be usable. I remember something about 8 GBs... Not sure where I heard it but it's something from those old (good) days back in the 90's....
Or maybe it was something that you shouldn't have more than 80% used space, cause FAT need thouse 20% to move data and stuff... Something like that? _________________ Registred Linux user #191143!

Too much work and too slow if I'd ever get DW MX 2004 working on Wine.... _________________ Registred Linux user #191143!

I know this doesn't make reiserfs writeble from windows but it might be something to investigate anyhow?

Thanks, _Nomad_
Defenitevly intressting project. Yet it still doesn't allow me to add my music to WinAmp from the ReiserFS partition, I need to copy the files of my choice first and then play... Even if it's what I wanted to avoid (having music on two several places on the disc), it still might be intressting for others, perhaps? Thanks!
And btw, another thing popped up in my mind: If i now use a FAT32 to put my music on, which is r/w from both systems, I think there's still a problem.
I want to share that partition on our local network. In Windows there would be no problem, but Linux? I know that I have to set some special permissions to let Samba access the files/directories. Will I be able to set those permissions on a FAT32?
Cheers!
