You can't. They decided to go with the online version because it doesn't take long for the printed ones to be out-of-date and wrong. Like the old x86-install directions that were sent with each of the 1.4 version CDs are now incorrect on some things here and there.
You could just do what I did. Use a floppy disk and save text files of each chapter of the guide. Assuming you can remember the first few steps (fdisk'ing up to chrooting) you could just mount the floppy and use nano to read the text.
Or you could install through a knoppix CD and that way you'll have direct access to the directions since it's a full-functioning desktop. |

If you have a broadband connection that's easily configurable, after you boot from the LiveCD and set the root password, press alt+f2 to go into a new virtual terminal, log in as root with the password you specified, and type
Code: | links http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml |
To switch back and forth, just press alt+f1 for the original terminal (the one with the cow logo), and alt+f2 for the web browser (links). |

well a couple friends of mine suggested printing it. Now lets face it, even if its font size 8, its still going to be a LOT of pages. I cant afford to print so many. And because i'm new, i don't rly know everything on what to do.
What do you think is best to do in my scenario? _________________ "One cannot know that which is not - that is impossible - nor utter it; for it is the same thing that can be thought, that is." - Parmenides |

Godfather, I would either write down the essential steps needed (since if you read the handbook before installing, you should know exactly what you are going to do), or have the handbook available in another console like stormcrowley suggested.

I like my way better since I don't want to sit there scrolling down page after page in nano. Having it separated by chapter makes navigating a lot easier. |

Here:
http://dev.gentoo.org/~plasmaroo/handbook-test/
It's beyond my understanding why it's not on the front page, that's the best resource about Gentoo installation, especially this one:
Code: | handbook-en-20040307.pdf 07-Mar-2004 13:38 843K
|
You can print it, you can copy it on a laptop set beside the box you are installing on, you can copy it onto your PDA, you can use markers on the printed pages and search the PDF... |

Those directions were the DRAFT for the real directions. They're out of date. For instance, the directions in the section for installing using knoppix work with old versions not the current versions of knoppix.
Would be nice if there was a PDF version like that of the current directions though. |

I used the multiple consoles and links approach the first time that I installed. I would prefer to just have the instructions on another computer but I only have one computer right now, which is wierd, I used to have 4. |

Very out of date. Especially the kernel config section, it's way different than the latest and greatest. But still turned very helpful once I started understanding what the heck I was doing and being creative. So for me the convenience of the format beats actuality. |
