I just installed XNC (The X Northern Commander) file manager. (suggested by earlNameless, thanks a lot.:)) It just rocks - super light, fast, functional and configurable. If you're tired of nautilus or konqueror or even xffm (which I was using just one hour ago), you should have XNC.

Screen Shots

1. It comes with a terminal. Ctrl + o swithes between the terminal and the panel. I just keep XNC open, since it's small and have acess to a file manager and a terminal any time.

2. Every hot key and mouse click is configurable. There are 75 hot key combinations and 25 mouse click combination you can configure in ~/.xnc/xnc.keys and ~/.xnc/xnc.mouse.

3. The configuration files are very easy to understand, like the style config for fluxbox. Check out files in ~/.xnc/

4. It has Virtual File System for all kinds of archives, tar, gzip, tgz and even rpm, etc. so we can just browse their contents as if we are in a normal directory.

5. In addition to excellent keyboard manipulation, it supports drag and drop (XDND). It claims to interract very well with GNOME and KDE programs. (Just tried that out with k3b, and it rocks.:))

6. It's easy to work with. It has 2 panels, one is the source panel, the other is the target. And it has 9 side bookmarks and a trash.

7. It's a Swiss army knife. Beside a terminal, it comes with a very light text vewer and editor (IVES); it provides you fast man page acess, memory, disk and ps info. In the ps info window, you can even send all kinds of signals to a process including the kill signal.

8. It's beautiful. It comes with the Mac aqua theme. Just choose that in the options.

That's what I have experienced so far. Give it a try just
Code:
emerge -av xnc

You will like it.

PS. To change file-program associations, just edit ~/.xnc/xnc.ext.

Nice app! :D
Just one question: how can I set it to work with TTF fonts.

You can edit ~/.xnc/xnc.ini
I use lucidasans font, my xnc.int looks like:
Code:

#This is initialisation file for X Northern Captain.......
#COLORS
northgui.color.background:              #d4d2de
northgui.color.shadow:              #515250
northgui.color.text:              #000000
northgui.color.text_warn:              #ff0000
northgui.color.text2:              #333333
northgui.color.cursor:              #bbb4f0
xnc.panel_color.info:              #111100
xnc.panel_color.selected_file:              #ffff00
xnc.panel_color.extension_file:              #769ab5
xnc.panel_color.normal_file:              #000000
xnc.panel_color.directory_file:              #1312f8
xnc.panel_color.execution_file:              #00ae3e
xnc.panel_color.link_file:              #00a799
xnc.panel_color.afs_file:              #7d5056
xnc.panel_color.image_file:              #ff1111
#FONTS
leoprogs.font:   lucidasans-8
leoprogs.list.font:   lucidasans-14
leoprogs.font.fixed:   8x13
leoprogs.viewer.font:   9x15
leoprogs.font.minifixed:   6x10
#COMMON
xnc.sysfiles.path:   auto
xnc.editor.name:   internal
xnc.viewer.name:   internal
xnc.geometry:   750x700+10+5
xnc.viewer.geometry:   750x700+10+5
xnc.panels.layout:     vertical
xnc.bookmark.show_and_use:     yes
xnc.afs.update:     prompt
leoprogs.focus.return:     no
#File generated by X Northern Captain Setup.....

and you can also use the xncsetup to change fonts, but IMO, there's too many fonts you wont even want to consider. So you're better off to just edit the xnc.ini file. :) Just replace the font fields with your favorite fonts.

Wow, I remember seeing XNC about 2 years ago and it was UGLY! I'm so glad it looks a lot better now ... I've just switched from Windows and I've been missing Total Commander. :)

Total Commander is worth using Crossover Office... :) or a Win running under VMWare... :)

there is nothing better that Total Commander.... can XNC beat it?

Just installed it, looks very nice. First file manager that reminds me of good old Norton Commander. If it is as useful as that was, definately a keeper!

it's an ok app....not much spectacular about it. personally, i prefer emelfm or rox(when i feel like doing drag and drop stuff). i guess it's a good alternative if you want to replece natilus or konqueor w/ something less bloated.

Nice. Two wishlist items right off-hand though:

  • make all windows resizable (especially the process info)

  • open terminal in the either pane.

One feature I really want is to use the MIME type instead of extension to determine the app association. I hope I can join the dev and add this feature in summer. The app is so nice that I want to contribute, but small enough so that I can handle it. :)

For those of you who like the NC look-a-likes, I've also found and use Krusader and TuxCommander. Worth looing at if you're looking for alternatives.

As far as TotalCommander (aka WinCommander) for Windoze, I've been using it for years. It's the first 3rd party app I install when putting together a windoze box. Total Commander is seriously awesome. period. ....just wish they'd port if to *nix.

This seems usable. Currently I'm having dozen of mc's lying around in terminal windows. It's too bad neither mc nor xnc can handle utf-8 nice, since I mostly do need it.

Wow, more choices, thanks!

It's the only shareware app I've ever bothered buying, it's that useful. As you say it is seriously awesome, but bear in mind that it has been in active development since the Win 3.1 days (!). Both Krusader and TuxCommander seem to be heavily influenced by totalcmd in terms of their GUI. They also seem to pretty advanced in terms of the features they've already got ... considering they're relatively new projects. Looks very promising indeed.

ck42 wrote:

Would be awesome indeed, but according to http://www.ghisler.com/efaqgeneral.htm#Linux:
http://www.ghisler.com/efaqgeneral.htm#Linux wrote:
Because of problems with porting of Total Commander to Linux, the Linux version had to be delayed indefinitely.

A great pity, although *if* he ever decides to create a *NIX port, it's likely to be too late anyhow since both Krusader and TuxCommander seem to be well on their way.

/me feels the urge to do a head-to-head XNC vs. TuxCommander vs. Krusader.

We got many file managers.
But the difficult thing is to choose between them.
Rox is good and fast too.

Ya, exactly that is which makes it difficult to find the best. :D

I think everyone find this file manager best,
to which kind he was used to.

So in my case I was used to the norton commander like type. :)
