There are several posts in the forums about this including:

If you are looking for hard benchmark numbers, you can probably find a lot of them with a google search.
Are you thinking about any file systems in particular? What filesystem did you use on your previous install? Were you happy with it?
A lot of people like reiserfs since it is pretty fast for many things. I use ext3 because it is stable, reliable and well supported. There are obviously other choices too... |

The info in the second thread shown is dated 2002, since then reiserfs has become rock solid stable. You can read all you want, in the end its up to you because those threads keep swaying you.
I use EXT3 for /boot and reiserfs for everything else.
There's no real reason I chose EXT3 for boot |

A big thread that I missed:

I'm not sure if you are talking to me or the original poster here. I never said that reiserfs isn't stable now (nor did I say that the threads made any impact on my decision...I've been using ext3 long before I ever started reading these forums). I guess I don't see how you jumped to that conclusion. I simply was getting at the idea that many people would characterize reiserfs as "fast" and ext3 as "stable" (since it is based on the well tested ext2).
I know some of these experiences might be the exception, but some people are still reporting reiserfs problems (and some people have problems with ext3 too):

Nonetheless, the chances are that no matter what filesystem you use, you probably won't ever experience a significant crash. |

k9, sorry if I misworded. I wasn't pointing it to you.
What I was trying to say was that back in 2002 which one of the threads was held, reiserfs was not recommended in the gentoo installation guide. Yet now in 2004 it support and available. I was trying to point out things have changed since 2002
Secondly I've read the long thread and every reply changed my mind between reiserfs and ext3... hence my "you can read all you want...in the ends its up to you" -- I chose ext3 as boot and reiserfs for everything else.
Hope that clears it up hey
Saying that I believe most gentoo ppl use ext3 and/or reiserfs over anyother file system |

I'm using Reiser on all my 'regular' partitions and ext2 on /boot. I'm doing this because I guess that ext2 is faster than ext3 since it's not a journaling system. _________________ Don't bother! |
