Try using "gdm" in /etc/rc.conf as I suggested and then as root:
Code:

shutdown -r now

If GDM comes up then choose to Login but see if you have a choice for KDE-3.2.1. Over in the on the Sessions icon. Now see if you can login with username and password..

when i used "gdm" it did the same thing as xdm since i don't have gnome installed. i'm not really loosing anything by using xdm except some eye candy right?
is there anything that kdm does that i need?

i'm going to post some logs to see if that sheds any light on things

here is kdm.log

********************************************************************************
Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

Hi,

I had a similar problem when i upgraded from kde 3.1.4 to 3.1.5 (now I use 3.2.1, and i had no problems upgrading to it from 3.2.0) so maybe I can help.

Firstly am I right in assuming from the lengthy posts so far that kde 3.2.1 works when you use xdm, but not with kdm?

Incidently I believe that using xdm is the reason you have lost the ability to reboot and shutdown - I believe that kde only gets that sort of route privileges when you use kdm. If you have gnome and use gdm gnome can reboot, but not kde etc.

Anyway when i broke kdm after upgrading from kde 3.1.4 to 3.1.5 I had to recompile xfree and qt - I am not sure why this was the case but it seemed that some of the libraries kdm was trying to load were not the ones it wanted. I don't think this is the way things are supposed to work - but it worked.

Hope that is helpful.

PS it was a while ago and I can't remember if i had to recompile kde after recompiling xfree and qt.

so let me ask this then. whats the easiest way to recompile xfree and qt without upgrading them to some newer version?

and is this the best way to go about this? just wondering since it seems like recomiling would be overkill, but maybe thats just the way things are :)

Recompiling is almost certainly overkill - and you might still have a different problem to me - but I am pretty new to this and have found that sometimes just compiling (overnight while I sleep) if the most efficient way to solve things in terms of my time - although it is certainly not the most elegant.

The simplest way to recompile without upgrading is firstly to
Code:
emerge xfree qt kde -p

If portage contains newer versions of xfree and qt than you want then create or edit the file /etc/portage/package.mask and stick the versions of qt and xfree that are newer than the ones you want in there. If you are unsure of the format have a look at /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask - you could just add the qt and xfree versions you don't want to this file but it will be overwritten next time you emerge sync

Wow.. thats good to know. I just read the README located at /usr/kde/3.2/share/config/kdm/ .

After reading that, my best guess as to what the problem might of been is that when you upgraded KDE that when you ran "etc-update" you overwrote /usr/kde/3.2/share/config/kdm/Xserver file and others blindly. Allot of people do this that are new to include myself. I actually overwrote "/etc/fstab" and "/etc/passwd", "/etc/shadow"... I'm sure you can Imagine what happened when I rebooted. I always learn the hard way though..

Come to think of it when I first ran "etc-update" (for the first time on Gentoo), was after upgrading KDE. I didn't take the time to figure out how "etc-update" works and blindy chose the "-5" option. This blindy replaced all old KDE files with brandnew fresh ones thus making KDE not startable. Among other things.. heh.. heh.. It only took me that one time to learn the correct way of how to use "etc-update" though.. spent days rebuilding my Gentoo system over dialup. I've never had any problems since useing "etciupdate" correctly.

I've since learned how to use "etc-update" very proficiently. Actually what I recommend doing after being alerted that "etc-update" needs to be run is in KDE is click on the Home icon on the toolbar.. Use this (Konqueror) to browse to the files that are posted in the "etc-update" output. Most of the time the files can be viewed in Konqueror. Just pull them up side-by-side to see the differences for your-self. As the "etc-update"'s diff'ing mechanism really isn't that intuitive. But with Konqueror you can atleast see both files side by side and plainly see the differences. You can then use "etc-update" to add, merge, overwrite,,, ect...ect...

I hope that little tidbit helps.
