|
|
i recently emerged kde 3.2.1 and when i rebooted the login was command line and not graphic like i had it before.
the things i changed since it last worked are:
changed XSESSION to be 3.2.1
merged all the new config files. i used the auto feature since all the files it said i need to merge i hadn't modified.
i've already made sure that i had run rc-update add xdm default and thats all set.
i was in the gentoo group and got some help there, but still nothing.
anyone have a similar experiance or know how to make it start with a graphical login.
thank you very much

I don't know exactly what is command line login. but you propably should see /etc/inittab and find out what is your default runlevel. |

You said, that you have xdm in default runlevel. Do you see that xdm wants to start when you are booting.
You must see some error messages at boot. Because it does not start. |

the only time i see errors is when i do a reboot and when its shutting down it has problems shutting the kdm down. there are 2 red exclamation points where it should be a nice green ok
the gentoo install docs said that when you install kde you need to run the following command
rc-update add xdm defualt
i had that working for 3.2. but once i installed 3.2.1 it broke the login process. it always starts at the terminal |

It is part of /etc/init.d/xdm
Code: | start() {
setup_dm
ebegin "Setting up ${SERVICE}"
#save the prefered DM
save_options "service" "${EXE}"
#tell init to run /etc/X11/startDM.sh after current
#runlevel is finished (should *not* be in the "boot"
# runlevel).
/sbin/telinit a &>/dev/null
|
You can try to remove &>/dev/null (last line) to see all error messages.
example
Code: |
#/sbin/telinit a &>/dev/null
/sbin/telinit a

ok so nothing so far has worked.
a couple of things that i have noticed that are strange.
first off, after following some of the requests from people my user prefs seemed to have been erased.
when i rebooted and started x up my screen wasn't the way i left it, and all my apps didn't seem to rememeber who i was.
thats no big deal, but strange non the less.
so i've basically have gone through all the files to see what i'm missing and i can't find anything.
my runlevel is set to 5 which i would think would take me to a graphic login but i still wind up at a termninal login.
anyone have any other suggestions of what i might look at to fix this |

Hey fico,
I don't know if this is going to help or not. But I had a similar problem when I first installed Gentoo. Although I wasn't upgrading KDE. I had configured XF86Config successfully per the "Desktop Configuration Guide" and choose KDE for my desktop manager. But the one thing that kept happening was I couldn't get KDM to start and I always ended up like you at a login shell.
Also ... at some point after getting KDE running, I had the same thing happen when I upgraded. I don't know what happened.. My screen and fon't settings were toast .. thats after I could actually get back into KDE ofcourse.
1) I would just like to say that you need to (as root) change your /etc/inittab back to default run level 3. "foton2" recanted his suggestion to going to run level 5. But you never went back to run level 3. So get back there.
2) Then Code: | env-update && source /etc/profile |
3) Then:
Code: |
Check to make sure that "xdm" is infact still set to start at the default run leve:
rc-update show
if its not there then readd it. You already know how to do that..
Then:
nano -w /etc/rc.conf
Verify that your displaymanager is set to:
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
and uncomment the last line entitled "#XSESSION="
should look like this now XSESSION="kde-3.2.1"
|
Do "Ctrl-x" then "y" and then "Enter" from nano to save and write the file..
At this point I don't think it will hurt for you to:
Code: |
env-update && source /etc/profile again and then reboot....
|
I hope this helps... Again I'm no Gentoo wiz. But I know what I've offered above can't hurt to try..

Some reference material.
Environment Variables
The /etc/env.d Directory
To centralise the definitions of environment variables, Gentoo introduced the /etc/env.d directory. Inside this directory you will find a number of files, such as 00basic, 05gcc, etc. which contain the variables needed by the application mentioned in their name.
The env-update Script
Several files in /etc/env.d define the PATH variable. This is not wrong: when you run env-update, it will append the several definitions before it updates the environment variables, thereby making it easy for packages (or users) to add their own environment variable settings without interfering with the already existing values. The env-update script will append the values in the alphabetical order of the /etc/env.d files. This is why many of the files in /etc/env.d begin with a number When you run env-update, the script will create all environment variables and place them in /etc/profile.env (which is used by /etc/profile). It will also extract the information from the LDPATH variable and use that to create /etc/ld.so.conf. After this, it will run ldconfig to recreate the /etc/ld.so.cache file used by the dynamical linker. If you want to notice the effect of env-update immediately after you run it, execute the following command to update your environment.
Updating the environment
env-update && source /etc/profile
|
Whether or not my use of this was correct I seemed to remember that this is what finally solved it for me.. but who knows.. mybe a Gentoo guru on linux guru can clear this up.. _________________ JB |

thats for the tip. it didn't get me working though
one thing is that when i run startkde from the termial i get a bunch of errors about not being able to find the display.
i'm at work now so i don't have the errors in front of me, but i guess my question is should 'startkde' work and boot me into kde or should i just be using startx?
could 'startkde' be pointing to my old kde install that doesn't exist anymore?
thanks |

ok so here are the errors when i type startkde from the terminal.
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
startkde: starting up
ksplash: cannot connect to X server

ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
startkde: shutting down...
warning: connect() failed: no such file or directory
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
so the only thing from that that looks interesting is the $DISPLAY not set line.
does this help at all?
should i be able to run startkde from the terminal as a standard user?
thanks |

There's lots of stuff in the Gentoo forums relating to these errors..
I would try starting kde from the shell as you suggested. If It doesn't start from there then it will give you errors. What are they..
I would do a search on "Can't contact kdeinit". That should prove usefull.
I wish I could've been more help.. Good luck.. _________________ JB |

thanks for the response. i checked out those posts and got some good ideas. nothing worked yet, but i'm i feel i'm getting closer.
one thing thats interesting is that i su to root then type shutdown -r now and then the console i'm in gets sent a bunch of carriage returns. anything where i go in my system that allows text to be entered it gets a bunch of returns.
very strange.
so things i've triend so far.
created the .xinitrc file in my users home directory and added this line to it:
exec /usr/kde/3.2/bin/startkde
i wonder if i should just reemerge kde and see what happens
thanks |

i've searched through all the other posts that releated to mine and i've done all of the suggested things and i still start up at a terminal!
i'm wondering if i unmerge kde 3.2.1 and go back to 3.2 if that will solve the problem.
my question is i'm pretty new to gentoo so i've never done the unmerge thing.
would would it take to get back to kde 3.2?
'emerge unmerge -d kde' or something like that?
and i would like to thank you guys for spending time helping me. thats why gentoo rocks. these forums and the irc channel are amazing! |

You need to readup first fico:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml?part=2&chap=2
Specifically "Code Listing 32: Pretending to uninstall software"
as well as:
You will also want to make sure that you unmerge the specific kde build.
so if its kde-3.2.1 then try (as root ofcourse)
Code: |
emerge -Cp kde-3.2.1
unmerge (-C)
WARNING: This action can remove important packages! Removes all matching packages. This
does no checking of dependencies, so it may remove packages necessary for the proper opera-
tion of your system. Its arguments can be ebuilds, classes, or dependencies -- see clean
above for examples.
|
After that if you want to try KDE-3.2.1 again the you will need to do:
Code: |
emerge sync
emerge -uD world
|
or you can just edit /etc/rc.conf to use kde-3.2.0.... you will need to modiy your .xinitrc file as well.. I don't use one and kde runs fine..
I would aslo see if using "gdm" versus "kdm" works.
I just did fresh install for a friend today and didn't have any problems.
I'm fresh out of ideas though. Good luck to ya.. you'll get it running..and unfortunately this is how everyone learns... always through allot of frustration trying to fix sheeeeot that is broken.. _________________ JB |
