hello,

a newbie here. trying out gentoo here. after 12-15 pages of jumping hoops, opening and closing nano a million times, emerging, mounting, chrooting, unmounting, blah, blah, i finally managed get to a point where the handbook said to do a reboot. *gulp*

so the sucker comes backs up with a wonderful message:

"Not found any [active partition] in HDD
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

what the heck is going on here? what did i do wrong and how do i fix it ? i did my best to follow the installation handbook. but the darn thing is like a puzzle. it has sections upon sections each of them littered with forks in the road, and an indecisive newbie (ala me) has no clue which fork to take.

please forgive my sarcasm. i have been at it for a few hours and this is my 2nd try. i am just frustrated. arrghhhhhh!

please help me!

ok. now i got major problems.

since i could not go anywhere i put in the livecd and hit enter. it started to boot from the livecd.

i switched to the console view and saw the following. these are just some of the messages. there are a whole bunch being spit out in the flaming purple console.

"hdc: timeout waiting for DMA
hdc: ATAPI reset complete
hdc: status timeout : status=0xd0 { Busy }"

finally my heyboard lights start to blink and i get a:

"Kernel panic: attempted to kill init!"

why mr. robbins why. why me. please help!

someone please tell me i dont have to do this all over for a 3rd time ?

It is starting to look like a hardware problem ...

Do you have any other bootable media (CD, floppy, etc.) that you can try on this machine ?

hello,

i replaced the cd-rom drive with a 52x drive. i do not get the " timeout waiting for DMA " errors anymore.

but i still do get the "active partition not set hdd" error. how do i set the active parttition on the hdd ?

i can now go into livecd. mount my hdd. and chroot into it. mess around and all. but how do i confirm that the active partition has been set ?

darn..... this sucks.... i need to learn how to read more carefully...... i just saw this line:

Quote:
We need to make this partition bootable. Type a to toggle the bootable flag on this partition. If you press p again, you will notice that an * is placed in the "Boot" column.

i set the "a". and boom. the almighty gentoo has awakened.
