ppc - iBook G3 --db emerge failure

I'm trying to install from Stage 1 on a G3 iBook (800 MHz), but Berkeley DB fails with no error message, the last thing it mentions is gcj not compiling a file. Since Python, in emerge system, evidently depends upon Berkeley DB, it's hard to get past that one, I guess.

Anybody else having this problem? I didn't turn up anything here searching "ppc db" --recompiling gcc, since that contains gcj, I think, in hopes it will do something.

Aha--USE="-java" did it. Had java in my make.conf file. I guess that was it.
