|
|
Hi,
I just finished my first ever linux install this morning, and I've been trying for the past few hours to get sound working, I've searched through the forums, and had a look at the docs, but I can't find anything, so I'm posting here
A bit of general info:
Kernel 2.4.24 (Compiled from the standard vanilla sources)
KDE 3.2.0
SB Audigy (The card I want to get working)
What I've done so far:
Re-compiled the kernel with the following options:
(*) Sound card support
<M> Creative SBLive! (EMU10K1)
[*] Creative SBLive! MIDI
<M> OSS sound modules
<M> Loopback MIDI device support
Emerged:
emerge emu10k1
USE="oss" emerge alsa-driver
Problems:
Trying to load the emu10k1 module by either rebooting or modprobe emu10k1 produces errors-
/lib/modules/2.4.24/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.24/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.24/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.24/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: insmod emu10k1 failed
Booting up KDE gives the following error-
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
That's all I've done so far, I'm sure there's something very obvious that I'm missing, but since I'm a "newb" I hope you can forgive me
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, it's much appreciated.

If you know how to compile a kernel then emerge development-sources and use it instead. All I do is build ALSA emu10k1 and oss-emulation into the kernel so I don't have to bother with modules and everything 'just works' TM. The 2.6 kernels generally give you a better performing system and are very stable now.
2.4 kernels are soooo last year :) |

Okay, I'm all synced up to Kernel-2.6.4-rc1, and it's working perfectly - Had a few problems with my Wacom mouse, but nothing a little forum trapesing couldn't fix.
Thanks very much for your help. |
