Hi, can anyone help me with the following: I'm new to gentoo and usually used something like SuSE or "yuck" RedHAt Linux, seeing that I only heard great things about gentoo I decided to try it out. Well the problem is that I built everything up until the point where you are suppose to see the kdm login screen, but this doesn't want to display, it only flashes the nvidia splash screen three times and then it goes into text mode saying that something like the following: "modprobe: Unable to locate module /dev/apm_bios". How can I fix this or work around it?

Try to set your login manager to xdm (in your /etc/rc.conf), to see if it is a problem with your X configuration or it's KDE. And yes, check your X log for the (EE) lines :-)

The safest way is to try that X works fine before installing kde/gnome/etc.

Hi,

Your X seems to work fine.

questions :P

1) Do you have apm_bios in your kernel configured as a module?
2) Kernel version?
3) Have you emerged the nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx packages?

And do you have AGPGART as module in kernel ? I saw a problem with loading AGP.

1.compile AGP support as kernel module.
2 install nvidia-kernel, nvidia-glx, run opengl-update nvidia
3. follow installing NVIDIA instruction, how to change X config, set in /etc/X11/XF86config
Code:

 Option             "NvAgp"         "1"

Firstly mbjr:

1.) My apm_bios is not configured as a module with my kernel, but I included it in the compiling configuration for the kernel (with make menuconfig where you type 'y' on the appropriate module).
2.)My kernel version is 2.4.20 (I want to upgrade to 2.6.x as soon as I get everything up and running).
3.)And I have emerged both the nvidia-kernel and glx packages.

Secondly foton2:

I have included the AGPGART in the compiling configuration before compiling.

I'll just go and check everything again and add the code section you gave me and see what happens :)

You can use 2.6.x at this stage :P You'll save some time for yourself;P don't forget to recompile glibc when you have your 2.6.x done.

Try to build apm as a module (say 'm'). That's a lil' easier to manage, but at least you'll see that your module works well or not. What does the syslog say? Have you tried to start up X only, with no KDM/GDM/whatever?

With the current kernel (2.4.20) I have built on my system I can start up X if I use twm :( , but then again twm works with anything. I'll try to get 2004.0 cd's and install 2.6.x kernel from them.

Another thing, how and where can I get the files to for the gentoo kernel 2.6.x to update if I don't want to use the cd's.

I don't really think it is a kernel problem. To get the 2.6.4 kernels do emerge gentoo-dev-sources. It seems to be a problem with KDM. What version? Have you checked the bugs? :-)
