I have a DFI NFII Ultra B motherboard and have three of my drives hooked up to the onboard Silicon Image 3114 "raid" controller, but it doesn't quite work. I haven't set up any of the Silicon Image raids on the drives, but I will use the controller as a regular controller (JBOD) and run software raid5 on the drives. The first two drives work just fine, but when I ran cfdisk on the last one, cfdisk hung on disk level. After a little snooping in dmesg, I found this:
Code:

If you notice, you can see that the third drive has a DMA problem. I tried to google for this error message, but all I found was a thread from January where they didn't find a solution. Being that I use the 2.6.5-rc1-mm1 kernel, I assume that I have the latest "official" sata_sil driver.

Have anyone else had this problem?

Also, I noticed from the two working drives that smartctl doesn't work. (I'm using the HighPoint Rockethead 100 on regular pata drives.) Should smartctl work? Anyone tried to check that?

I hope someone here have an answer for me 8)

If you are getting a DMA timeout that is indicative of a bad drive. Of course I would start with the standard troubleshooting methods of plugging the drive into a different slot on the chain, and seeing if it gets the same error, may be the cable or the controller. Of course, depending on your raid mode you may not want to try this.
I'm afraid that is my only suggestion. Sorry.

I was just wondering if there was an update on your status, this post almost directly affects a system I am going to build.

The errors went away as the drivers matured. Now there are no more problems, so you can safely buy a Silicon Image 3114 based system :)
