Just recently installed Gentoo and then updated to kernel 2.6.3. Loving it so far, but setting up my printer is giving me nightmares. I have a MINOLTA-QMS Magicolor 2300 DL color laser printer connected via USB. I've been working through the Gentoo Printing Guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml), but I'm having troubles.

I've emerged CUPS and Foomatic successfully, and added the USB modules the printing guide says to add into the kernel (I originally compiled them as modules, but that didn't work so I compiled them directly into the kernel - which seems to work a little better but it may be a figment of my imagination).

After plugging in the printer and doing tail /var/log/messages], I get:
Code:
Mar 23 11:12:23 yackety [<c02cafbe>] hub_port_connect_change+0x288/0x28d
Mar 23 11:12:23 yackety [<c02ca996>] hub_port_status+0x45/0xb0
Mar 23 11:12:23 yackety [<c02cb2ac>] hub_events+0x2e9/0x364
Mar 23 11:12:23 yackety [<c02cb354>] hub_thread+0x2d/0xe8

Mar 23 11:12:23 yackety [<c02cb327>] hub_thread+0x0/0xe8
Mar 23 11:12:23 yackety [<c0107269>] kernel_thread_helper+0x5/0xb
Mar 23 11:12:23 yackety
Mar 23 11:12:23 yackety Code: f2 ae f7 d1 49 89 4c 24 0c 31 db 89 d7 83 e9 01 83 f9 ff 74

This doesn't appear to be what I'm looking for according to the printing guide.

If I try to cat test.txt > /dev/usb/lp0 I get a permission denied error. After searching around on the forums here I believe I've managed to gather that the 2.6 kernel places USB printers in /dev/lp0 instead. This seems to check out as I have a /dev/lp0 but no /dev/usb/lp0. However, if I cat test.txt > /dev/lp0 it just hangs and I have to ctrl-z to get my console back.

I figured perhaps cat just wasn't working (which I've also noticed has happened on the forums) so I continued with setting up CUPS through the web administration console (I downloaded the PPD from linuxprinting.org). Setup appears to work properly - I'm able to find and select my printer in the drivers listing - and without any print jobs active it says the printer is idle and waiting. If I try to print a test page, however, it shows an error message of "Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds"

I've searched up and down the forums but can't seem to find anything that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
