I now (hopefully) have set up my Intel Wlan card.
As my only possibility to give it a try is the (sort of) public access at the university I to plan to test that thing.

The card is now up as eth1 exactly as the ethernet card where I simply plug in the cable and have a connection to my router, network and internet.

How is this going to work in the wlan? I suppose it won't be enough to put the Laptop in the access area and do a ifconfig eth1 up, right?

What I do have is:
an account nam,
a password,
and a ssid

As there will only be one chance (without getting further info from the net, because if it doesn't work, I will not have a connection unless I get back home again) I'd need some help or tips.

Hello,

If you've got the kernel module loaded and you have an ethernet interface for the wireless device, the next step is to configure the "wireless extensions" (essid, channel, wep) to the interface. To do this, you need to emerge wireless-tools. Check out the man pages for iwconfig and iwspy.

I'm assuming that you have emerged pcmcia-cs if you've gotten this far. pcmcia-cs uses iwconfig and iwspy to automatically configure the wireless extensions. For this, you'll need to configure /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts

HTH,

Patrick
