Does anyone feel the same?
I´ve installed Gnome 2.6-rc2 and I´m missing some of the core functionality in yelp, the search function and nautilus is overwriting folders in subfolders...
altough I like the speed of this release and the better file dialog, why are these things missing now???? _________________ my jabber ID is kill_switch@jabber.org |

And why is SMB still borken beyond recovery? =P
(Yeah I know, I have no rights to complain, as I can't even program a tic-tac-toe game as if it were for my life.) |

How is SMB broken?
I admittedly don't use smb:// to mess around with stuff on my shares simply because the number of programs that support gnome-vfs are too spotty for me to have it really working, but between programs that actually support gnome-vfs, smb:// seemed to work fine. |

smb:// seems to work fine for some..
but not for me.
It doesn´t find workgroups, computers, ...
It´s sometimes even crashing nautilus....

I've never had it work, ever. And I am sure my Samba installation works, other smb clients work just fine. |

Hopefully I'm not insulting your intelligence, but you did emerge gnome-vfs with 'samba' in your USE flags, correct?
smb support isn't installed by default in gnome-vfs, perhaps with good reason, since gnome-vfs's smb support pulls in the masked samba3. |

Well just finished to emerge the gnome rc3 but I have a little problem (guess it's a metacity one). If I use xinerama with dual monitors and if I maximaze a window then it takes the whole two screens and this is not very practical. I've reemerged metacity wiht USE="-xinerama" but nothing changes. |

SMB support works for me....sorta. Nautilus doesn't show an icon for my WinXP system (only my Samba server), but I can view it just fine when I type the name into the location bar. Had it lock up Nautilus on me once. Other than that, it works ok. _________________ "This is a UNIX system! I know this!" -- little girl from dinasaur park |

Superjaded, thanks for the gnome-vfs tip.
I spent the better part of 30 minutes cursing the GNOME devs for documentation that I thought lied, as none of the SMB tips worked |

Hi,
I can tell you only for Yelp (I will try samba stuff later...) - current maintainer of yelp (Shaun McCance) wrote new xslt stylesheets and it brought much more speed to yelp and it's users (try gnumeric manual (help file) with 2.4 version and with this new 2.6 - probably yelp-2.6 is now several *times* faster).
Because of feature/ui freeze in GNOME, he didn't finished support for viewing man and info pages - yes it is known regression.

I've found a couple of problems with the 2.6 system like yelp and for some reason it doen't do a dir refresh all the time when you create a directory from the save file to location dialog. However I've never had samba work better.
I have two XP systems on the home network and I can find them fine and access the resources without any problems, oddly enough I didn't even configure anything in samba!
