I have just compiled gentoo on my laptop and it was so easy to setup, but now when i am trying to do pretty much the same install on my desktop pc (p4c800 deluxe MB) its been a total nightmare. i have made the configs more or less the same on my laptop and my desktop to try and keep it simple, but that hasnt really worked :( .
i managed to get the network card working with the
modprobe sk98lin

i thought i wouldnt run into the same problems as some of the other posts with the same MotherBoard as i was only using a WD caviar 80 gig IDE (i still had to use compatible mode in the bios as enhanced just caused the system to hang on boot) but now after the install i get

Booting `Gentoo 2.6.4`

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x083
kernel /kernel-2.6.4 root=/dev/hda3 real_root=/dev/hda1
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0xc00, size=0x2482b4]
initrd /initrd-2.6.4

error 15: File not found
press anykey to continue..._

what do i need to do to get the system to boot ?

my grub looks like this

default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.4
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.4 root=/dev/hda3 real_root=/dev/hda1
initrd /initrd-2.6.4

# Only in case you want to dual-boot
# title=Windows XP
# root (hd0,5)
# chainloader +1

please help

Hi
are you sure your kernel and initrd are in / and not /boot
maybe

title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.4
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.4 root=/dev/hda3 real_root=/dev/hda1
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.4
is what you want
