Problems with Canon G1 under USB

I have looked through loads of posts and similar problems but cannot find a solution to this.

I plug in my Canon G1, switch to Playback mode and all that happens is that the light on the USB Hub flashes for a second then goes out. dmsg gives:

hub.c: new USB device 00:03.3-4.1, assigned address 17
usb.c: unable to get device descriptor (error=-75)
hub.c: new USB device 00:03.3-4.1, assigned address 18
usb.c: unable to get device descriptor (error=-75)


That's it. lsusb, usbview etc do not show the device.

This camera in this port used to work on Suse 8.1. This is the first time I have tried it under Gentoo.

Anyone any ideas?
