For some reason, gaim has taken up a fondness for crashing, only when I double click on a contact as to open a new IM window.

The message when running it in a terminal is:

Code:

Gaim has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
This is a bug in the software and has happened through
no fault of your own.

It is possible that this bug is already fixed in CVS.
If you can reproduce the crash, please notify the gaim
maintainers by reporting a bug at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/bug.php

Please make sure to specify what you were doing at the time,
and post the backtrace from the core file. If you do not know
how to get the backtrace, please get instructions at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/gdb.php. If you need further
assistance, please IM either RobFlynn or SeanEgn and
they can help you.
zsh: 7198 abort      gaim -d

Moving the .gaim/ directory failed to do anything useful.

A peculiarity is that if I startx as another user, root or otherwise, and try to run gaim it behaves normally. However, if I run X as the user I normally use and try to open gaim after running su, it'll still segfaults upon opening a new IM window.

Unfortunately I fail to remember what might have happened to instigate this change in behavior.

are you using agressive cflags? Try remerging it.
If not submit a bug on Gentoo Bugzill NOT the gaim bugzilla. If there is indeed a problem, they'll upstream it to gaim devs

I've tried remerging it with both CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe" and CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe"

You also may want to take a hint and get a backtrace. Plus let me know if you're using gnome, just upgraded to glib/gtk+ 2.4 and are using an SVG theme for gnome (like Gorilla).

And always search both gentoo and gaim bug trackers to see if a bug has been filed for your problem already.

Found it after searching on Gentoo Bugzilla... https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45192

That is what I assumed. It is an upstream bug with gnome/gtk+ 2.4, which has broken more than just this.
