For installing on dual Athlon MP, do I need the Athlon-xp image, the i686 image, or the universal image?

Athlon XP, and then if I remember rightly, use 'smp' as the kenel option (check boot options to be sure) and this will use the smp kernel for dual processors.

They should all work by the way ... the athlon one will just be tuned more to your processors.

(You could use the i686 and then change the processor type and optimisations in make.conf, if you have already downloaded it)

Also if using kernel 2.6 with dual athlon patch your kernel with this:
http://www.muru.com/linux/amd-smp-idle/
and enable
Code:
<*> AMD76x Native Power Management support

under ACPI support.
Will drop your cpu temps a lot.
