I hope someone can help me with this, as I have searched the forums for a quite a while, and still am unable to find an answer (actually this is my first post. Have been using Gento for almost 3 years now, and this is the first time I have been completely stumped).

I currently have two printers on my file/print server. the first is a Brother HL-1440 via parellel port. I just purchased an hooked up an HP 5150 via USB port. I have always been able to connect very easily to my Brother printer via smb thru the other 4 PC's in my office. Windows or Gentoo.

I hooked up the new HP, got it printing fine on my print server, absolutely no problem. However when I try to print via any of the other PC's, it sees the printer, but will not print to it. I have the proper drivers installed in the other machines.

Is this some kind of permission problem that cups/samba has with the USB port? The device port shows a wierd address of usb://5150 . I thought it should be /dev/usb/lp0.

Anyhow, any help would be appreciated....

No one has any ideas? It's very frustrating... I mean the file sharing works via samba, the laser printer works via samba remotely and on cups on the server, the new printer works with cups on the server, but not via samba. I can see it from other PC's, but can't print.....

I don't know much about your printers/setup, but in my case, that problem was solved by setting

FileDevice On

in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
