Funny they don't talk about the new version so much as the Unreal Tournament 2003 demo on the new versoin.
Thanks DRobbins for not announing it until after the forum watchers had gotten their downloads |

I'd remove it until the Slashdotians went away. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Mr. Hand: "Hi Mr. Ibiblio! I brought a friend along. His name is Slashdoto."
Mr. Ibiblio: "I don't like him Mr. Hand. He's gonna be mean to me."
Mr. Hand: "No he won't, he just wants some of your bandwidth."
Mr. Ibiblio: "No no, oh nooooooooooooooooooOOO!" *splat* _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head."

I was mainly thinking of bandwidth wasted on people only looking for UT. How much 'exposure' to Gentoo will these users really get? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Expect the forums to become quite busy over the next while.
I think maybe a FAQ of Common problems would be a useful doc to have. |

Frequently both resources are skipped in favor of posting questions they answer. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Ha, I'm guilty as charged. I glanced at the FAQ and saw the first question, how do you pronounce Gentoo, and I assumed that the rest of the questions also weren't technical.
On the other hand, half the reason I like gentoo is the forum. The users are SO NICE , they help out newbs like me, even if the question being asked is rather niave (eg. wheel what's that ?) |

I think you're confusing the official Gentoo FAQ with the Gentoo Forums FAQ, which was written entirely by forum participants, and to which everyone is encouraged to contribute by posting to this thread. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

No, I've never heard of the forum faq until now. And in looking at it, it appears that the questions and answers are mainly about how to use the forum itself, not gentoo....
Oops, I did it again . Reading a bit more, it get's more technical. (shesh, I should RTFF).
This is a good thing. I think it needs to be more obvious. (maybe renaming to Tech-FAQ would help). |

Yeah, actually I overstated that case. The first section "Gentoo Forums FAQs" was written by participants in that thread I linked to - the rest of it is the phpBB FAQ. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

You also didn't 'follow' the links in my post, otherwise you'd have realized I was referring to the forum FAQ _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Y'know, speaking of faqs (and in this case, the Gentoo.org one, not the forum one--I remember back in the good old days--err, 6 months ago or so? At that point, almost everyone using Gentoo was a fairly experienced Linux user, and the mailing list either had rather complex questions, or funny stories. (I am, by the way, the first one who PUBLICLY admitted that a bootstrap had died after a few hours because I'd accidentally left a :wq in e/tc/make.conf. After that, hoardes of imitators also 'fessed up.)
Seriously, one could see that Gentoo was beginning to become popular when half of the questions on the list (this was stage two, I guess--for one thing it was before the forums) were answered in the faq. I don't think this is a bad thing--newcomers often don't realize that they should check faqs and other online docs before posting questions. Nothing horrible about that, it's part of being a newcomer.
It says something good about the distro I think--that these newcomers are enjoying it enough to try to make it work when it doesn't go right for them out of the box.
Philosophically yours,
Scott |

Has news about the UT2003 iso spread to any other gaming-related websites? ibiblio.org is even busier a day after it was announced on Slashdot than before! Perhaps the gaming community is going for the iso rather than waiting in line at FilePlanet or whatever for the win32 version. Anybody know? |
