I'm brand new to Gentoo (you have probably seen my other pleas for help elsewhere in the forum in the past day or so), and am using a Dell Inspiron 1100. The video card does not play nice with Linux, and it requires the editing of the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and the installation of a patch. When I went to edit the config file, there was nothing there. I saw when I emerged kde that XFree was being put on... I don't think `emerge xfree` will create /etc/X11/XF86config. Try `XFree86 -configure`. Try the configuration file XFree86 create. If it's all good, copy it over to /etc/X11/XF86Config. |

Hey Jarhead
Here is an XF86config file for the vesa frame buffer. Most likely it will work right out of the box. It did on my IBM A30 laptop at lest. I took it from the default install of slackware 9.1. Just cut and paste.

Just run /etc/X11/XF86Config, that will create the config file, make sure, at the very last step of the config wizard, when it asks if it is okay to put in some location, that you type "y" and don't just press enter. |

Well, I did mean that, but, strangely enough, I do have the xf86config file in my /etc/X11, weird. |

In order for my display to work properly, I need to install the 845patch. http://geocities.com/randomnumbergenerator2001/ has been a great resource, and has helped me alot when I was still on Fedora. Problem is that they don't give a command to implement the patch into the startup process for Gentoo... Any ideas what that may be? Here are the Redhat and Debian based commands found on the site:
Redhat-echo "/sbin/845patch 10000" >> /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
Debian- echo "/sbin/845patch 10000">/etc/init.d/845patch
chmod +x /etc/init.d/845patch
ln -s /etc/init.d/845patch /etc/rcS.d/S20-845patch

I assume this driver is for Xfree. Gentoo way

every gentoo system that I known have '/etc/init.d'. All the start up scripts in there. If you don't have one then you are in serious trouble(?) |

It didn't recognize that it was there for awhile, but is doing so now. strange... I'm still fighting with the patch setup, but I should have that beaten soon.
