When I run the xf86config tool I get the following during one of the steps:

Quote:

The valid range for horizontal sync and vertical sync should be documented
in the manual of your monitor. If in doubt, check the monitor database
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors to see if your monitor is there.

So I attempt to hope on over to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors

Code:

bash-2.05b# cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors
bash: cd: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors: No such file or directory
bash-2.05b# more /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors: No such file or directory
bash-2.05b#

Ok. So what the heck is going on ? What happened to my "Monitors" file ?

I believe I have all the XFree stuff I need.

Code:

bash-2.05b# emerge search xfree

xf86config will allow you to specify a monitor, or it will let you provide the HorizSync and VertRefresh numbers on your own.

Dig around on the website for your monitor manufacturer, and you will find what you need, in the technical specifications section of the manual.

I'm pretty sure you havn't done anything wrong. I was helping set up my friend's laptop, and I didn't know what to put in for the h-sync and v-sync. I tried looking in the Monitors file but it did not exist. I ended up not entering the values at all.

BTW, the monitor belonged to the Dell 600m SXGA laptop.

I did figure out the specs for my monitor by digging around on the web. But I was curious about what the heck happened to the missing "Monitors" file. Did I fail to install something ? Or is it missing for everyone ?

I am running xfree-4.3.0-r5, and I don't have that file either.

If you want DOC then
Code:

# USE="doc" emerge <package>
