To answer your first question, yes I've searched...this would seem like such a common problem that I thought it would've been covered, but I've had no luck finding anything...
my problem is this: running KDE on my laptop and I can't play any video files (either mpeg or avi) through either mplayer or kboodle...the files run, and I can hear audio and skip around in the video, but the picture is all black...
these are my use flags: "-gtk -gnome mpeg usb x wavelan qt ssl tcpd kde dvd hardened ethereal pcmcia alsa cdr mmx sse"
i have the mpeg2videocodec, divx4linux and win32codec packages emerged...and still nothing..
what to do? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks..

in mplayer, i've got the same problem....sort of. sometimes, the movie goes all black (like when i click the screen or something)....but another click on the screen fixes it.
have you tested it in xine yet?

same exact thing with xine...same with xine, with mplayer and with kaboodle...im just guessing here, but this doesnt seem app-specific.

what sort of video card do you have? and is it set up correctly?
what extension are you loading in your /etc/XF86Config-4?
I use (and love!!) mplayer ... try mplayer -vo help to see your option for video out
could be something like your Xv isn't supported, and you're trying to use xv output my default

sorry, i should've been more clear
try using mplayer -vo <whatever> movie.avi
where <whatever> is a choice from the mplayer -vo help list
ones to try are xv, x11, gl or gl2 (if you gl is working) ... x11 or xv should work ... and it'll give you a sense of what isn't set up in your XF86Config file, if that has anything to do with it

I too have the same problem.
One workaround. Slap pause and then play and the video will appear in Xine. Also, dragging the progress bar back to the beginning. I've been playing with XINE settings all night to no avail.

It sounds like an overlay problem to me, but I'm not sure
Try playing it without the overlay in mplayer use the "-vo x11" option...
if that solves it you have a problem with your overlay and should fix that, (because using the -vo x11 is using the slow x protocall instead of you video card optimized way of displaying things) |

I had the exact same problem: since I use alsa, mplayer presents a black screen but plays sound... somehow.
I got it working using kdesu.

I'm getting the same problem now, as well. If I open a video file, the screen is black.
However, if I open a second instance of the program (xine, totem, etc) while the first one is playing, then I see the video. |
