Hi all
I haev searched hi and lo for answers to this but cannot find any so I amhaving to post. I am a complete newbie to gentoo and want to install from a stage 1 to learn more about it. I have downloaded the latest livecd (2004.0) and can boot from it but then I encounter problems. I have an adaptec 29160 card with my hard disks attached which I have to manually install by modprobing the aic7xxx module. However I cannot get the onboard ethernet to work. Reading the install guide advises to have a look at the net modules under /lib/modules/2.4.24-xfs-r3/kernel/drivers/net, however this directory does not exist on my livecd! I have figured that after loading the SCSI module I have to run the /linuxrc command to continue booting and I can then partition my disks etc so I know this is working at this point. When I have booted to this point I can find the forcedeth module which I have read can be used for these network cards and the directory above does exist, but if I try to run modprobe I get the error "Kernel requires old modprobe, but couldn't run modprobe.old: No such file or directory"
My hardware is an Epox 8RDA+ board with Athlon XP 2500
Please help!! |

Blueworm
I have tried all commands before running the linuxrc command (straight after I have installed the aic7xxx module) . The first 2 give me module not found, lsmod refers to the scsi module, usb-storage, hid and usbcore and dmesg gives me an error that the command is not found.
After runing linuxrc I get the smae erro for insmod as I did for modprobe -"Kernel requires old insmod, but couldn't run insmod.old: No such file or directory"
lsmod lists the four modules detailed as before and the dmesg output shows no indication of my network card, although it does detect that it is an Nforce2 IDE chip. |

Blueworm, I downloaded the image you advised, although I got it from the UK mirror service and don't get as far as before. After loading teh SCSI module I run the linuxrc command, but this just fails saying I have not got a valid LOOP setting. Just d/l ing the EXACT image you tried to see if it is the mirror that has problems. BTW the CD I was using before was the universal image rather than the minimal, should this have made any difference? If I cannot get the NIC working I believe I can install from the CD, however following the instructions the chroot stage does not work, unfortunately I can't remember the exact errors, I can get them tomorrow if that will help. |

Try this boot the live cd.
Forget about your scsi Hard disks.
Once it has booted check to see if forcedeth is loaded.
If it is do
Once you have your net working now
modprobe your scsi adaptor card. |

Ok I have managed to installl now. I had to boot from my IDE DVDRW rather than the SCSI cdrom that I was using - worked first time and I didn't even have to modprobe my scsi card. Thanks for your help blueworm! |
