Ok, i'll give it a shot - try to bear with me, i set up the same exact printer recently but i already had cups configured for my first printer.
Here's a general overview:
Step 2: You're gonna need to go into your kernel config and enable either your parallel port or usb and usb printer support, depending on how you want to print. If you're not sure where/how to do this, search around or post your kernel version and i'll tell you which menu items this is. If you used genkernel, you might already be ok. And if you're printing to a network printer you can skip this step completely.
I just built mine into the kernel, if you use modules you'll have to modprobe them.
At this point, let's try diverging from the printer doc a little. Go ahead and emerge hpijs if you want, i already had it for my deskjet, and so i have the option of picking between gimp-print and hpijs for the laserjet. I don't think you'll need it though.
Now do a /etc/init.d/cupsd start
and instead of running thru the command line stuff just point a web browser to localhost:631 - this gives you a graphical interface to use. If you go to the administration tab there will be a series of steps to go through to add a printer.
If this doesn't help or you still get stuck, just post specifically what is going wrong in your install process. _________________ One by one the penguins steal my sanity |
