Alpha Install Problem

Running latest livecd I could find........

This is livecd.unknown_domain (Linux alpha 2.4.21-alpha-r4) 21:50:15

Problem is that it won't let me login to the livecd. I enter root without a password and it gives me "login incorrect." I can't find a reference to a root password on the livecd in the documentation (It's no password on the other archs I've installed....x86/ppc/sparc). I've seen some reports of pam problems on alpha....I'm wondering if this is it.

Any ideas?

This is a 4 proc Alphaserver 4100 with gobs of ram.
