I have looked all around the internet, and haven't really been able to find any sort of agreement on what the best GCC flags for my processor are. It's an AMD K6-2 333Mhz. I've seen a lot of things saying that the "-march=k6-2" flag is buggy. A few people on other forums have said "-march=i586 -mcpu=i686" is best, but this seems a little bit shady to me.
Also, on a semi-related note, is it worth $20-$25 to get a 500Mhz K6-2, if I'm just using the laptop for internet, text editing, gaim, etc? I'm inclined to say "yes" but I'm a little reluctant, not so much because of the price (which is obviously very small) but I don't want to risk messing something up while putting a new chip in if it won't be worthwhile performance-wise. 333 -> 500 seems pretty good but does anyone have any idea/experience as to how that might translate into real performance? (this is the first time I've attempted to resurrect an older machine into Linux)
Thanks!

You might check out this thread, it has a TON of information about compile optimizations.
