ALSA Problem...

The sounds like put on hold when im listening to music or some other program is occupying the sound. then once that program finishes (like when a song ends etc) i get like all the sounds that took place while it was on so im flooded with like 20 consecutive messenger alerts and crap from gaim and amsn. anyone know how to stop this?

Sorry i guessed prolly been asked before but wasnt sure what to search for and i thought would be easier this way. thanks for pointing me in right direction.
