Must be true. I read it online

Quote: | GNOME, which stands for GNU Network Object Model Environment, is the default desktop for Red Hat's and Gentoo's Linux distributions.... |
Have I missed something? |

I saw that too. I thought console was default, and the desktops were added |

They lie! it can't be, xfree isn't even installed natively. how can something be "default" if it isn't even there until you tell it to be. _________________ #include <LinuxUser #324070>

How sadly misinformed Sean Michael Kerner is. I use gnome, but it certainly didn't come installed by default, I had to emerge it. _________________ Never try to explain computers to a layman. It's easier to explain sex to a virgin.

isn't gnome in the GRP packages? Then maybe it is some kind of default desktop, together with KDE and others =)
If you consider gentoo in console-only mode a desktop computer you are probably a minority, though I know you can read mail browse the web and do other neat tasks in textmode - But i don't want it!
This article marks a point in Gentoos history where it is as popular to draw attention from not wellinformed media.
Well, it's a long way to go until gentoo linux finds it's way to desktops where no geeks reside... _________________ And by the way - Gentoo needs an official WIKI!! |

the whole point of compiling and using USE flags is that kde or gnome or something else or nothing are all viable DEFAULT desktops for gentoo. Default loosly meaning the environment is compiled to support, and it isn't exactly added on, while the defualt enviroment is installed as welll and simply sits there unued. |

I checked the USE flag, and it includes "+gnome +gtk" by default.
Does that mean Gnome is the default DE for Gentoo?

It also includes "+kde +qt", so I guess we have two default DEs then |

The author of the article intended to say that, when he installed Gentoo, he used GNOME as default desktop without further issues. He never meant to imply that it was recommended or preferred. |
