I was wondering if anyone knew if gentoo searches for your motherboard, COU, etc... on startup or not. because I want to upgrade but am unsure if gentoo will flip out on me. I'm running a p4 2.53GHz/533 FSB, and I am upgrading to a p4 3.0GHz/800MHz FSB w/ hyper-threading and an 875 chipset. I would greatly appreciate any light that can be shed on this topic.

You will have to recompile kernel if you want to have support of hypertheading.
And I think that there could be problems with software if you compiled it with your current processor, because you will have different processor. (mainly you will have more processors)
The nuber of processors can be set in /etc/make.conf
And it is hard to say how software builded on different number of processors will cooperate together. _________________ Pentium4 2.4Ghz 533Mhz, Intel® Desktop Board D845GEBV2 + LAN, 768MB DDR 266Mhz RAM, 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440, SB Live! 5.1, TEAC CD-552E, TEAC DW-548D, Packard Bell 1512SL Monitor, HP DeskJet 640C, Opti UPS PowerPS 800ps. |
